PLEASE-recipes my Italian daughter-in-law and family, will eat

My Italian daughter in law refused to eat my Christmas dinner. I am not a bad cook, but I did grow up on a farm in Ohio. We eat beef and potatoes here. But when I tried to explain my dish to her sons, she gave me a pitiful look and said, "Oh, they won't eat that.
I was crushed! (She brought her own crock pot of sausage, bought at a speciality shop in Pittsburg, and sauce so they would have something eat.)
I have tried Italian Cooking Magazines, but I don't understand half the ingredients, and I live in a non Italian town. You can't find the stuff in groceries here.
Is there any help for me, or do I just give up and have her bring enough for everyone!
Feeling Hurt in Ohio

P.S. even if you can't help, you've helped by giving me a place to vent my feelings. Many Thanks!!

Easy Fix
by: Patty R.

It seems that it is half your daughter in law being rude and half you getting hurt feelings.

Very easy to fix! Next dinner ask her what Ingredients she needs for her family meal. Tell her the sauce was so good you want her to teach you. Have some fun with it. You can have a true Italian teach you to cook? LUCKY YOU!

All how you look at it really.

Hope you had great holdays.

Just one more thing...
by: Antoinette (continued)

Look. I need to add this to my original comment. The behavior you described was very rude.

I believe any guest in any home should be thankful when someone takes the time to serve them dinner.

I was trying to imagine her intent in this situation. But intent or not, the behavior was unkind to you.

I hope 2010 brings your peace and happiness.

Italian Daughter in Law
by: Anonymous

Wow, this is a difficult one. First of all, I'm sure your Daughter in Law thought she was being helpful by bringing her sauce to your house. She probably knew her children would only eat hers.

This is not to say that you are not a good cook. But she probably knew that this was the only thing her kids would eat. Sauce is one of those things that always taste different, depending on the person making it. Kids can always tell.

It is very sweet that you want to cook something Italian for her. Here are some options: Pasta Fagioli, Chicken Soup, Baked Chicken, Rapini, Ricotta Cheesecake, Salad Dressing. All of these recipes are on my sidebar.

Let her bring her sauce, but have other options available to serve. In my family, a wonderful Sunday dinner would consist of a bowl of Chicken Soup, Macaroni, Baked Chicken, with a Salad at the end of the meal. Then, when the coffee was served, we would have a piece of Ricotta Cheesecake (pie).

With this dinner, you are welcoming her sauce, but you are serving the main dish.

I hope this helps you. If you try any of my recipes, let me know how they work for you. If you have any problems or questions, contact me, I want to help!

Take care,
Antoinette
